Energy efficiency matters at Homebase
What we did
There is lots of activity behind the ongoing improvement in our energy efficiency. We've introduced changes to the technical specifications of our buildings and to the way we encourage our store managers to tackle their energy bills. Some of the changes include:
- the creation of energy bureaux for 120 Homebase stores. These control the use of energy and gas from a central point and prevent unauthorised 'overriding' of controls
- the roll-out of '3 mode control' systems in Homebase stores (which can save between 13-34% in energy cost) and motion sensor lighting in all Argos stockrooms.
- fitting automated meter readers (AMRs) in almost every store so that the store manager can be provided with accurate and timely data on their energy use.
Why we did it
We need to reduce energy consumption in order to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions. These reductions can only be achieved through investment in new technology, energy management systems and behavioural change.
How we did it
We've fitted AMRs in almost every store so that the store manager can be provided with immediate information on electricity and gas consumption. Argos and Homebase both have energy awareness campaigns to focus attention on the ways in which we can cut energy use.
