Packaging delights

Packaging

"“WRAP applauds the hard work by the Home Retail Group packaging team. The Group is making great progress in delivering significant reductions in packaging and waste to landfill - while helping customers make positive product choices and recycle more" Liz Goodwin CEO WRAP

What we did

Under a voluntary industry initiative launched in 2009 and led by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) we pledged to work with other retailers to make a 15% packaging reduction* and a 50% cut in waste send to landfill by the end of 2012, compared with 2007 levels. We also pledged to work hard to help consumers recycle more.

We’ve achieved these targets ahead of schedule and have made a 25% reduction in our packaging* since 2007 and a 72% reduction in landfill waste!

Why we did it

We believe there will be clear benefits for the environment, our business and our customers if we cut down on product packaging waste and use more reusable and recyclable packaging.

How we did it

We’ve made lots of changes to our packaging; introduced reusable packaging and have developed ‘end to end’ packaging solutions for all lines supplied from our major direct sourced factories. We’ve saved just over 13,000 tonnes of packaging over the last three years.
